A Note to Our Parents
Welcome! For this unit, we will be focusing on the life cycle of a plant. While learning about the plant life cycle, we will also be focusing on other areas of study, such as identifying long vowel sounds and sequencing events in the correct order. We will be expecting your child to make entries to our class blog, which will feature our class plant's growing process, along with other activities. This website will incorporate all of the ideas and activities that will be used throughout our science unit. There is a Concept Map page that is a broad view of what will be covered throughout the entire unit. There is also a Vocabulary page, which features the key vocabulary words that will be used in the lessons. The vocabulary activities will help your child if he or she is having difficulty with any of the vocabulary words. There is also a featured Homework Page, so you and your child can easily locate the homework that is assigned. Feel free to review the Resources for Further Study Page to help your child learn more about the topic. There are many extra videos included as well.
In our lesson about the life cycle of a plant, we will be exploring the various stages a plant goes through in its lifetime. To help us expand our knowledge on this topic, we will be using informational texts. In conjunction with these texts, we will be examining pictures, videos, text features, graphs, vocabulary and our very own plants. These diverse forms of learning will help us observe how a plant grows, develops, matures and reproduces. The students will be able to use this website as a tool, and this will enable them to expand on their knowledge base, through interactive learning, before your very eyes! We are excited to work together to build on your child's understanding and comprehension in this exciting, collaborative and engaging way of learning. We hope you are as well!
In our lesson that includes identifying long vowel sounds, the instructor will be reading the book From Seed to Plant to the students, as well as reviewing the plant life cycle, which they will have learned from the previous day. Students will then use the new vocabulary they have learned, as well as background knowledge about long vowels to use the SMART Board to identify the sounds along with the appropriate letter. The students will be using different technologies such as SMART Board activities, Glogster, Google Drive and other internet resources. Please have students do their best to do their own work but I absolutely suggest to parents to be there and guide them along, especially when using the internet.
In our lesson including sequencing events, our students will be reviewing the life cycle of a plant. Students will learn how to tell about the cycle in the correct order (or sequence), using the key transitional words (example: first, next, last) that will be learned throughout the lesson. We will also be looking at texts that are in the incorrect sequence, and the students will be working cooperatively in groups to fix the errors and place the events in the correct order. Students will use various technologies such as viewing a BrainPopJr. video, participating in a SMART Board activity, and reviewing with the "Rags to Riches" game on the featured Glogster page.
For our final culminating project, we will be creating a complete portfolio, where each student will track the stages and progress of the class plant. Each student will participate in a daily blog, which will be featured on this website, labeled Daily Blog. Each blog will consist of a photo of our class plant, and will incorporate short answer and multiple choice questions to answer as well. Each daily blog will be printed for students to keep together as an ongoing portfolio. Students will edit his or her own work, and complete a self-reflection of the entire unit at the end of study.
It is very important to assist with your child's learning process at home as well as in school. We will be closely monitoring each student's computer use in order to create a safe and productive learning process. Please make sure to do the same at home, and if you do not have access to a computer, visiting the public library would be beneficial. We will also allow students to have extra time on the computer during his or her lunch time if there is a need. Technology is the new wave of the future, so allowing students to explore is essential for a positive learning experience. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for your time, and happy learning!
